Teaching Philosophy

A seasoned educator, Kara dedicates herself to empowering dancers through enthusiasm, kindness, inclusion, and artistic exploration. Kara’s classes focus on expanding creativity and versatility through attention to transitions, musicality, and healthy risk-taking. Throughout class, students are supported in being fully present as they navigate the work; they experience opportunitues for play, discussion and reflection that bolster critical thinking skills and camaraderie. Kara invites students to instill unique perspectives into their practices to elevate and transform their technique, communities, and the artform.

Since 2004, Kara has taught students of all ages and levels. She holds an MFA in Dance from Hollins University (2019) and has taught courses in Classical Ballet, Dance Composition, Modern Dance, Contemporary Ballet, Pointe, Dance History, and Dance on Film. She has led numerous workshops, coached professionals, and has been on dance faculties at Florida State University, Wake Forest University, Mills College, and Santa Clara University.

Student Testimonials

  • Kara Wilkes is an exceptionally talented teacher, choreographer, and mentor. Not only is she incredibly detailed with her work, but she also gives you the space to explore and make it your own. I personally have grown tremendously working with Kara and anyone would love working and learning from her. It’s rare to find someone as kind and generous as she is!

  • I have had the pleasure to be taught by Kara and perform in two of her choreographic works. She brings clear intention, brilliance, and grace to each of these projects and understands how to bring her dancers into harmony with the artistic vision and message of each work. Her passion for humanity, justice, and authenticity underscores all her choices and her work reflects this integrity and devotion to the artistic process. Knowing Kara as an artist, choreographer, and teacher has moved me to embrace dance as the most human part of me and I am deeply grateful to have been in process with her.

  • I have never experienced a choreographer who makes me feel so empowered, not only to develop such an intimate relationship with the work but also who clearly has so much respect for us as people and dancers. I felt seen, safe, and ready to rise to the challenge in Kara’s rehearsals. A better environment truly could not be made for a creative setting.
